Marry Italian or Don’t Marry At All

February 3 by CristinaVilla

So, today I was thinking — I know, surprising — that I still have to find a blog of an Italian woman dating or married to a foreign man. I kept looking and looking but it seems like there’s none out there?

So then I thought than maybe there are not many Italian women that are that “adventurous” to date a non-Italian man. Or maybe it’s because as Italian women we are so lucky to have the world-acclaimed best lovers at our doorsteps that…why bother going beyond the Alps to look for some other “meh” lovers.

Or, again, maybe it’s because we don’t really speak English that well — and, yes, the language of love is universal, but great communication is key in any given relationship.

Browsing around, I did find a couple of articles regarding the so-called “mixed couples,” but they are all telling the stories of Italian men dating or married to foreign ladies (Eastern European for the majority.)

So maybe the stereotype of “Moglie e Buoi dei Paesi Tuoi” (lit. translation: wife and cows of your own country) — which is an Italian proverb that means that you’d better get married to a woman from your own country, and find a job in your own country — still exists?

Ha! I doubt the job part is true in these days for Italian youngsters, who are all running away the fastest they can from an (apparently so) jobless country. However, the “marry somebody from your own culture” still seems to be valid, because all the couples I know or read about or heard about are 100% Italian or not Italian at all.

Quite interesting.

Especially because I’ve never really thought about the fact that I’m probably part of that 1% of Italian women who is married to a foreign man. And surprisingly enough I’m dating a fellow European, and not some other man from more exotic countries, which seems to be the other stereotype that media are drilling into our heads these days. As if Italian women that are in love with a non-Italian man must be crazy attracted by some other physical qualities that are obviously world-renowned features of let’s say African men or American men (and is that even true?!)

Well, anyhow, maybe that makes me a very adventurous person? Or maybe that makes me a very anarchic dater because I didn’t choose to spend my life with a fellow Italian? Or maybe that makes me just a woman who found her soul mate, which happened to be entrapped into an Englishman body.

I’d choose an Italian stallion over a Latvian any day of the week 😉 But I have always had a soft spot for English men!

ABOUT ME

“Me, My Brit and I” is not a blog about a relationship. It’s a blog about differences. Coming from two different cultures, two different backgrounds, two different languages, two different countries can be a great source of misunderstandings — but first and foremost, it usually is the source for hilarious, laughing out loud moments. At least for us.
